The Power of Food

Recent setbacks, including the temporary closure of its shared kitchen and construction delays at the East End Food Hub in Riverhead, have impacted the nonprofit East End Food’s ability to produce and distribute local food and postponed the opening of its farmers market.

The mission of the organization, based at Stony Brook Southampton, is to support, promote, and advocate for farmers and producers, while ensuring everyone in the community can enjoy and be nourished by local food.

In response to the setbacks it has launched the Power of Food campaign to raise money for reopening its kitchen, completing the farmers market construction, developing its education space and local food storefront, and sustaining its staff.

Those wishing to help can do so by clicking the donate link at eastendfood.org.

Say It Ain’t So, SoFo

Peter Ambrose, the well-known local catering chef who opened the SoFo Sandwich Co. in Wainscott in May, announced on social media over the weekend that the business’s final day would be this past Sunday, Aug. 25. Tomato Taste-Off

Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, one of the first Community Supported Agriculture farms in New York State, will hold its annual Great Tomato Taste-Off on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Forty-seven varieties will be available for tasting, including many of the top-rated tomatoes from previous taste-offs.

Tasters are supplied with pens and clipboards to track their ratings, and cubes of country bread and designer water will be available to cleanse the palate between tastes.

Tickets are $10, free for farm members and children under 12. Heavy rain will cancel. Parking is on Deep Hill Lane, which can be reached from Town Lane or Side Hill Lane.

Not Burgers Are Here

Nikki’s Not Dog Stand, which opened in Sag Harbor in June with vegan hot dogs, is now serving vegan burgers. Both the Not Dogs and burgers come from Field Roast, purveyors of a variety of plant-based foods.

The offerings include a Carolina burger, a California burger, a New Mexico burger, and an Oklahoma City burger. There’s also a lunch box for kids, with the kid dog, small fries, and a drink.

Latin-Themed Pop-Up

Tip Top Hospitality, the restaurant group behind Sen, Smoky Buns, K Pasa, and Kumiso, has announced Besos at Kizzy T’s, a Latin-oriented pop-up that opens Thursday at that East Hampton restaurant. (Besos is Spanish for kisses.)

Among the many items on the food menu are chicken empanadas; shrimp, octopus, and sea bass ceviche; mojo pork with rice, black beans, and mustard sauce; chicken curry with quinoa and pickled onion, and garlic shrimp with citrus rice.

The drink menu features Latin classics such as caipirinhas, pisco sours, mojitos, and passion fruit margaritas.
