Feasts for the Festival of Lights

Mon, 12/12/2022 - 14:33
There are a number of options on the South Fork dining scene for those looking to mark Hanukkah with a meal out or specially prepared food to take in.

Rowdy Hall in East Hampton has Hanukkah specials on Sunday and Monday. They start with a potato latkes appetizer with house-made apple sauce and sour cream and are followed by a red wine braised brisket and a honey cake for dessert. These are being offered a la carte in addition to the restaurant's regular menu.

At Rowdy's big sister restaurant, Nick and Toni's, also in East Hampton, Hanukkah will be celebrated on Sunday with a la carte specials such as beet-cured Arctic char with apple fennel salad, a braised short rib entree with butternut squash caponata and pignoli gremolata, and doughnuts with raspberry jam and chocolate ganache for dessert. The regular menu will also be available. Reservations can be made by calling the restaurant at 631-324-3550 or through Resy.

L&W Market in Bridgehampton will have to-go meals for Hanukkah as well. The market will have latkes and jelly doughnuts beginning with the first night, on Sunday. On Dec. 26 it will also have matzo ball soup, a cheese board, house-cured salmon, red-wine braised brisket or a whole roasted chicken entree, with rosemary roasted potatoes, sauteed Amagansett greens, and Yakatori glazed sweet potatoes as side options. Dessert is either a Milk Pail apple crisp, jelly doughnuts, or chocolate Hanukkah gelt.

Orders must be placed by 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, for pickup on Dec. 26 between 1 and 3 p.m. at Almond Restaurant next door. Orders can be placed online or by calling (631) 537-1123.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
