Rondinone at Madoo
“Sculpting Wind,” a flotilla of 16 black-painted sailboats made by Ugo Rondinone within the past four years, is on view in the Summer Studio at the Madoo Conservancy in Sagaponack through Sept. 13.
Made from driftwood, canvas, and paint, each ship is set on a polished concrete plinth. Though still, the vessels, which vary in scale, appear to strain against invisible headwinds. In fact, each is titled after one of the world’s named winds -- “Mistral,” “Scirocco,” and “Harmattan,” among them.
The hulls are pieces of driftwood altered only by the black paint that seals them and a drilled hole for the mast. Each mast is a found twig, and the sails are canvas painted black with raw edges.
Gestural Abstraction
“Bodies,” an exhibition of new paintings by Spencer Lewis, will open at Harper’s Gallery in East Hampton on Saturday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., and continue through Sept. 17.
Mr. Lewis is known for his large jute canvases that include a range of mediums, though for this show he has made a few smaller and easel-sized works. In this, his sixth show with the gallery, he is continuing his exploration of gestural abstraction.
“Bodies” is also the occasion for a “soft launch” of his new monograph, “Untitled,” which features a selection of work from the past 10 years.
Two Art Shows in Montauk
The Montauk Artists Association has a busy week ahead. “The Print Show” opens Thursday at the Depot Art Gallery in that hamlet and will run through Aug. 25. Featuring monoprints, woodcuts, linoleum cuts, and other print mediums, it includes work by AG Duggan, Andrea Sher, Cheryl Richer, Laurie Hall, Setha Low, and Ted Shaine. A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.
This weekend, the association’s Art Show on the Green will bring together on the plaza around the gazebo work by 72 artisans, Friday from noon to 6, Saturday from 10 to 6, and Sunday from 10 to 5. Open rain or shine, it will include paintings, nature photography, aerial photography, ceramics, sculptures, jewelry, and more.
Inspired by Nature
A show of works by Casey Chalem Anderson, Thomas Condon, Quincy Egginton, Katherine Milliken, and Gayle Tudisco opens Thursday at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor and will remain on view through Sept. 4.
Ms. Anderson’s oil paintings are inspired by the landscape and natural forms of the East End. Mr. Condon is known for his landscapes, floral compositions, and, by contrast, architectural subjects devoid of human presence.
A lifelong connection to the beach informs much of Ms. Egginton’s work. The subject matter of Ms. Milliken’s paintings comes from her varied experiences outdoors, including horseback riding and safaris. Ms. Tudisco is a plein-air artist who captures the landscapes of the East End and Florida.
A reception will take place Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Katsipis in SoHo
“Adrift,” a solo show of work by the Montauk photographer James Katsipis, opens Thursday at VFA Gallery, 151 Wooster Street in SoHo, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. It will continue through Sept. 9.
The exhibition features three of the artist’s series, each of which pays homage to Montauk. The black-and-white photos of “Mermaids of Montauk” place beautiful women in locations ranging from the ocean to Camp Hero to Lazy Point. “Blurz” is a series of lush color photographs of waves in motion, while in “Graintauk” Mr. Katsipis turns to analog film to capture such famous locations as Lunch restaurant, Gosman’s, and Deep Hollow.
Free Painting Workshops
Barbara Thomas, an artist and educator, will conduct two free painting workshops at Third House in Montauk this weekend, starting Friday morning at 10 with a plein-air painting class. Ms. Thomas will help guide the participants. Registration is with [email protected].
A community sunset painting workshop, suitable for families, will happen on Saturday from 6 to 8. Attendees can take picnics and blankets; tables will be set up. Ms. Thomas will give a quick sunset painting demonstration. No reservations are needed; the rain date is Sunday.
Participants for both workshops have been asked to take their own paint supplies.
Abby Abrams Solo
“The Art of Abby Abrams,” a solo show organized by Teri Kennedy, will open at the Springs Community Library with a reception on Sunday from 11 to 1, and remain on view through Sept. 15.
Ms. Abrams moved to Springs in 1990 from Greenwich Village. Since then she has explored many mediums and materials, including illustration, embroidery, sculpture, ceramics, pen and ink, watercolor, wood, stone, and leather. More recently she has turned to watercolor, acrylic, and oil landscapes, still lifes, and floral subjects.
Dada-Inspired Paintings
“A Room Full of Stories,” a show of Dada-inspired works on canvas by Emanuel De Sousa, will open Saturday at the Stella Flame Gallery in Bridgehampton with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. It will run through Sept. 15.
Born in Portugal and based in Scotland, Mr. De Sousa paints carefully rendered figures in complex, surreal compositions juxtaposed in flattened space with tigers, frogs, soldiers, and other objects and animals.
A trunk show of jewelry by Katey Brunini will be on view Saturday and Sunday.
