South Fork Poetry: ‘Grief’

John Ferrell / Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division

It's the finality
Knowing I can't call you
Anymore
Nor meet in the morning
For coffee
And a good review
Of how fucked up people are
And wanting to rub it in
Their stupid faces and laugh
So hard
My heart is heavy
But your send-off was
Absolutely hilarious
I drank too much
In your honor
So much so that
The next day was a blur
Of heartache and laughter
A pretzel of love
And loss
And a reminder that
Life is short
Have fun
Laugh hard
Fuck up
Pick up the pieces with
Your friends
Whose love supports
All the mistakes you made/make
Love is the bridge between us
God bless a good friend
May you have more than one Mike in your life
