Talk and Walk

LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton will host a talk about roses and an artist walk-and-talk on Saturday. On the occasion of the release of her new book, “Roses in the Garden,” Ngoc Minh Ngo, a celebrated photographer and writer, will be at LongHouse at 2 p.m. to present her images and insights into some of the world’s most beautiful rose gardens. A book signing will follow; copies will be available for purchase.

Tickets are $35, $25 for members.

At 4 p.m., Vadis Turner will lead visitors to her sculpture “Venus Rising,” which was created especially for LongHouse. The work launches the artist’s series of abstract outdoor sculptures informed by the Roman goddess of love. “Venus Rising” is composed of braided bedsheets cast in aluminum, with scalloped edges made with cast dining plates.

The talk is $20, free for members.

A Noted Architect

Hamptons Doc Fest, in partnership with the Southampton Arts Center, will celebrate Mother’s Day with a screening of “Ada — My Mother the Architect” on Saturday afternoon at 2 at the arts center.

While Ada Karmi Melamede is one of the world’s most accomplished and prolific female architects, she is not well known outside the architecture circles of her home country of Israel. Her daughter Yael Melamede, a filmmaker and former architect, sought to correct that with her new documentary, which is now playing at film festivals around the world.

After the screening, both the director and her mother will hold a question-and-answer session. Tickets are $20, $15 for members.

Piano and Cello

The Wong Doe and Jones Duo, who have been performing together since 2015 and have recorded two albums, will perform a recital at the Southampton Cultural Center on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Michael Kevin Jones studied cello at the Royal College of Music in London. His recording of Bach’s solo cello suites at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has received critical acclaim.

Henry Wong Doe, a pianist from New Zealand who is a graduate of the Juilliard School, has won prizes at the Sydney, Busoni, and Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competitions.

The program will include compositions by Grace Tin Yen Christus, Joaquin Rodrigo, Antonio Vivaldi, Max Bruch, and Daniel van Goens. Tickets are $25, $10 for students.

‘Growing Up Literary’

Presented in partnership with Canio’s Books, “Growing Up Literary: George Plimpton’s Son Reflects” will bring Taylor Plimpton to the Bridgehampton Museum’s Nathaniel Rogers House on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The son of a founding editor of The Paris Review, Taylor will reflect on growing up in Sagaponack among such literary titans as Peter Matthiessen and Kurt Vonnegut.

Taylor is the author of the memoir “Notes From the Night: A Life After Dark” and a regular contributor to Sports Illustrated, Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, The New Yorker, and many other periodicals.

The Loungers in Sag

Next up in the music series at Sag Harbor’s Masonic Temple are the HooDoo Loungers on Saturday at 8 p.m. The band’s website cites the Gri Gri of Dr. John and the rock-and-roll of Fats Domino as sources of inspiration informing their mix of classic soul and New Orleans Swing.

In a review of the band’s 2022 album “So Beautiful,” David Van Der Merwe cited their “jazz-street-funk mashup sound [and] their respectful reworking of Americana roots classics.”

Tickets are $25. A part of the proceeds is donated to local charities.

Gary Cooper Festival

The Southampton Playhouse, the nonprofit theater that reopened earlier this year in the former Southampton Cinema on Hill Street, is hosting a Gary Cooper Festival this weekend with screenings of “Ball of Fire” (1941), “The Pride of the Yankees” (1942), and “High Noon” (1952).

Cooper spent his summers with his family in Southampton, where he was often spotted at the cinema. He died in 1961 and is buried at the Southampton Cemetery.

Both screenings of “High Noon” (Saturday at noon and 3) will feature a talk by Maria Cooper Janis, Cooper’s daughter, and a signing of her book “Gary Cooper Off Camera: A Daughter Remembers.”

Richard Sandomir, author of “The Pride of the Yankees: Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper, and the Making of a Classic” (Sunday at 3 and 6:30), will discuss the film after the 3 p.m. screening.

Acting Workshop

Kate Mueth, the actor, director, and founder of the Neo-Political Cowgirls, will lead a six-week acting class for adults on Monday nights from 7:30 to 9, starting on Monday and continuing through June 16 at the Bridgehampton Community House.

Each class will incorporate voice, movement, and character exploration exercises. In addition, participants will work on contrasting monologues that can be kept for auditions.

The cost is $260; payment plans are available. Questions can be addressed to Ms. Mueth at [email protected].
