Wimberley in Chelsea
Since the 1960s, Frank Wimberley has been known for his dynamic, multilayered abstract paintings, described by the New York Times art critic Grace Glueck as “beautifully brushed and infused with a light that magnifies their intensity.”

Collage has been an important element in his practice since early in his career. “Frank Wimberley: Collage,” a selection of paintings with collage elements, as well as traditional collage works on paper, some dating from the early 1970s, will open today at the Berry Campbell Gallery in Chelsea and remain on view through April 17.

Underpainting, thick texture, drawing, untraditional materials, and collage have been a through line in Mr. Wimberley’s work. The noted collage artist Romare Bearden was a friend, and Mr. Wimberley, who divides his time between Queens and Sag Harbor, exhibited at Bearden’s Cinque Gallery from 1982 to 1998.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
