Training More Compassionate Leaders

Thu, 02/15/2024 - 11:31

The Center for Compassionate Leadership, founded by Laura Berland and Evan Harrel of Montauk, has announced a customized Compassionate Leadership Certification Training Program to be held this spring for nonprofit organizations on the South Fork.

The center’s compassionate leadership training was featured in The Star last year and has graduated more than 500 leaders from 45 countries since its inception in 2020. The program will be available at no cost to participating nonprofits thanks to a grant from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation.

Nonprofit organizations located in East Hampton and Southampton Towns and which operate with paid staff are eligible to apply to send up to two team members to the program. The training will be limited to 30 participants. Organizations wishing to send more than two people have been invited to put additional staff on a waiting list.

The certification program will consist of a six-session “learning journey” — two in-person retreats of three hours each and four online sessions of 90 minutes each. They will be held on six Tuesdays from March 19 to May 7.

Research has shown that organizations with more compassionate cultures are more productive and have employees who are more engaged and creative. Participants in this program, according to Ms. Berland and Mr. Harrel, will learn how to bring compassion into their organizations to support the well-being of staff and strengthen organizational effectiveness.

The topics to be covered include how to have difficult conversations, how to create a culture of belonging for all, and ways that nonprofits can establish an environment of cooperation and mutual support for one another.

Information including how to apply, session times, and an outline of the curriculum is available at cfcl.org or by emailing [email protected].

Golden Eagle Art Supply Store to Close

The Golden Eagle, an art supply store and East Hampton institution that first opened in 1954, will close next month. It’s a familiar story, as told most recently by Nancy Rowan and Michael Weisman, the Golden Eagle’s owners: The internet has decimated brick-and-mortar retailers across the country.
