While it’s definitely fun for the little ones, the Bridgehampton Lions Club’s annual Carving Contest, postponed from Monday, Oct. 24, to Tuesday, Oct. 25, due to weather, is really a family affair, because jack-o’-lanterns as good as these shouldn’t be just for kids. There are numerous categories this year: Top Secret, Dragon Glow, Protest Patch, Helle Decor, Witches Brew, Grim Grin, Jack Cousteau, Classic Jaqueline, Misfit, and Odd Lot. The grounds of the Bridgehampton Community House open at 5 p.m., which is when contestants can begin to set up their creations. Carving happens in advance of the event, not at it.

Think outside the box, people: Past carvers have used everything from traditional orange pumpkins to crazy gourds to carrots and all kinds of squash to create their winning entries. Contestants can also carve something outside of a category and still be in the running for a freestyle or Master Blade prize.

Prizes will be awarded in each category, with $50 for first and $25 for second. Best overall creations will be judged among 13-and-unders — $150 first, $100 second, and $50 third — and for Master Blades — $400 first, $250 second, and $150 third.

There is no charge to enter. It begins with a puppet show by Liz Joyce and a Couple of Puppets, followed by cider and doughnuts from the Milk Pail. Those anxious to see the show have been advised to arrive early.
