East Hampton’s underclassmen — and underclasswomen — took the spotlight at the Suffolk freshman-sophomore track meets at Longwood High School on May 18 and 19. Both teams showed off their talented up-and-comers ahead of the county championships this week.

Jasper Samuelson had a tremendous day on May 19, winning the sophomore 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.

Emmett Schumann took second place in the freshman 400 meters.

Watts Comly-Bolick placed sixth in the sophomore 800 meters and eighth in the sophomore 3,200 meters.

Adrian Bello landed an enormous long jump of 20 feet, 9 inches, to place eighth among the sophomores. He also placed eighth in the sophomore triple jump, reaching 39 feet, 10.5 inches.

The 4-by-400-meter relay team — Schumann, Justin Herrera, Comly-Bolick, and Samuelson — placed fourth over all.

“It was a great way to finish the meet and showed the toughness and teamwork of this group,” said Sean Knight, the head coach. “We are very proud of the effort, attitude, and competitive spirit our athletes showed. Meets like this are important because they give our younger athletes a chance to step up, gain confidence, and see what they are capable of. The future of East Hampton track and field is very bright.”

Those future track stars also include: Nate Morgan in the 110-meter hurdles, Zimmerman Levy in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles and the 200-meters, Max Oransky in the 200 meters and 1,600 meters, Ryan Chen, Dutch Lawless, Tony Nguyen, Cody Ortega Munoz, and Brandon Torres in the sprints, Mario Iniguez in the 200 meters and 400 meters, and Kieran Zay and Wayne Mortensen III in the throws.

The freshman and sophomore girls competed at Longwood on May 18, performing especially well in the field events.

Vanessa Rizzo placed second in the sophomore pole vault, reaching 8 feet, 6 inches, which was a personal record. She also placed sixth in the sophomore 400 meters, finishing in 1:02.9, another personal record. Lai’la Sanders placed eighth in the freshman 400 meters, finishing in 1:04.58.

Lilly Wood-Savarese placed third in the sophomore high jump, reaching 4 feet, 6 inches. Skyler Goulart tied for ninth in the freshman high jump, reaching 4 feet, 3 inches. Margaret Greenwald placed sixth in the sophomore 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:13.01. Olivia Stiglitz finished sixth in the sophomore 1,500-meter racewalk with a time of 8:23.96.

The sophomore 4-by-400-meter relay team — Josie Mott, Greenwald, Rizzo, and Sanders — also placed sixth, finishing in 4:32.36.

Mott finished seventh in the sophomore 800 meters with a time of 2:35.91.

Sydney Powers finished sixth in the freshman triple jump, reaching 32 feet, 6.75 inches. She also finished 10th in the freshman long jump, reaching 15 feet, 8.25 inches.

Lucy Knight and Flora Jiang competed in the sophomore shot-put. Knight also participated in the discus. Laura Martinez and Danett Gonzalez-Alcala competed in the 2,000-meter open steeplechase.

Both track teams were scheduled to compete in the county Class C championships at Comsewogue yesterday.

Sierra Stumpf and Sabina Piecyk qualified in the pentathlon, a combination of five track and field events. C.J. Echavarria and Sophia Figueroa qualified for the 100-meter high hurdles; Vicky Chen in the 100 meters; Sanders and Sara O’Brien in the 400 meters; Martinez and Mott in the 800 meters; O’Brien, Figueroa, and Greenwald in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles; Rizzo qualified in the 200 meters; Stiglitz, Bennett Greene, and Olivia Chapman in the racewalk. Powers, Leah McCarron, and Lucia Mogavero qualified in the long jump; Mogavero and Powers in the triple jump; McCarron, Lizzie Daniels, and Amy Fleming in the shot-put; McCarron, Daniels, and Knight in the discus; Wood-Savarese in the high jump, and Rizzo, Chen, Angie Castillo, and Alexis Salazar in the pole vault.

“We’re super proud of the girls who worked hard and qualified for the county C championship meet,” said Yani Cuesta, the head coach. “We’re looking forward to great competition and hope that our squad has many successes. We always want our athletes to have P.R. performances.”

Seventeen athletes on the boys team qualified for the county championships: Marcus Oransky, Levy, and Morgan in the 110-meter high hurdles; Comly-Bolick and Maxim Bellenoue in the 3,200 meters; Hudson Goulart and Nelvin Suchite in the 100 meters; Liam Knight, Goulart, and Schumann in the 400 meters; Samuelson, Sean Perez, Jatniel Gonzalez, and Andrew Perez in the 800 meters; Marcus Oransky and Levy in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles; Samuelson, Comly-Bolick, Bellenoue, Max Oransky, and Gonzalez in the 1,600 meters; Goulart, Knight, Suchite, Schumann, and Aaron Torres-Garcia in the 200 meters; Bello the long jump and triple jump; Torres-Garcia in the triple jump; Goulart for the high jump, and Franco Palombino in the shot-put.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” Coach Knight said. “This has been one of the most exciting seasons in East Hampton track and field, and these athletes have earned the opportunity to compete against the best in the county.”
