The entire season came down to a single game. Bonac baseball’s 2-0 loss to Westhampton Beach at home on May 12 cost them a playoff berth. Bonac would return the favor, though, winning the final two games of the series and knocking the Hurricanes out of the postseason with a 9-4 victory at home on May 15.

In spite of the playoff disappointment, it was a heck of a run. The Bonackers won six straight and eight of their nine final games to remain in contention until the last week of the season, battling to the bitter end.

Trevor Meehan pitched the final home game, his last start on the mound. “I remember the first time I was here. I didn’t even pitch my freshman year. I played first base. Ever since sophomore year I’ve thrown up here. It’s been great.”

Meehan is one of 11 seniors on the team who were part of an epic 2025 run, reaching the Suffolk County Class AA finals for the first time in 30 years, ultimately losing to East Islip. One thing they proved over the last two seasons: Never count these guys out.

“I’m really proud of these guys for not laying down and getting down on themselves,” said Victoreddy Aguero, a senior outfielder. “I wish we could’ve sparked things up a lot faster, maybe things would’ve turned out different, but I’m just happy to have gone through the ride with these guys.”

“They were awesome. They were part of something great last year,”

Vinny Alversa, the head coach, said. “They just came up short this year. But a great group of kids. We got four guys going off to play collegiate baseball. It’s pretty damn cool.”

Meehan will play at the University of Bridgeport next year. Aguero is heading to Felician University. Mason Miles will play for Bucknell University, and Finn O’Rourke will play at Saint Peter’s University.

“We dug deep trying to pull one out. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get it all the way done, but we still made a horrible season into a somewhat good one, for the most part,” O’Rourke said. “I’m definitely going to miss these practices, these games.”

Luke Rossano, Jacen Sheades, Cole Assogna, Livs Kuplins, Aaron Brito, Michael Hren, and Brody Biondo round out the soon-to-be graduates. Alversa was sorry to see all of them go. “Sad part is, I’ve known most of them since they were 9 and 10 years old, so it gets me a little bit,” he said.

Kuplins thinks the late-season run proved the underclassmen have what it takes to succeed next year. “I feel like we grew a lot as a team. We didn’t make the playoffs, but originally I didn’t think we had any heart or competitiveness, and the young guys showed me that they’re men, and that’s the takeaway from the season. Energy has been up. Team morale is up. The kids are talking about how much fun they had and that they’re excited for next year.”
