Thu, 07/02/2026 - 12:51

Heavy damage was reported last week after a Springs teenager crashed his car on Springs-Fireplace Road near Shadom Lane there.

Town police said Estaban Quizhpi Loja, 19, was headed south at 2:30 a.m. on June 24 when the car left the road, collided with a utility pole,  and overturned, striking a second pole. The car, which sustained heavy damage, wound up against a tree on the driver’s side.

Mr. Quizhpi Loja sustained a whiplash neck injury and was taken by a Springs Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment. He was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

A man who fell asleep at the wheel was injured in an accident last Thursday. Steven Graebe of Coram, 49, was eastbound on Pantigo Road at 5:30 that morning when he fell asleep, he told police.

The car struck the back of a pickup truck driven by Javaun Thomas, also of Coram, who had been waiting on the shoulder to merge onto the road. Mr. Thomas was not injured, but Mr. Graebe told police he had arm pain. He declined medical attention at the scene.
