Train service out of Southampton was temporarily suspended Wednesday after an eastbound train hit a landscaping vehicle in Bridgehampton.

Bus service was to replace all eastbound trains from Southampton, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority website.

Brett Simon, who was headed to Amagansett at the time of the accident, said the two-car train he was riding from Hampton Bays stopped just east of the Bridgehampton station near Narrow Lane East. No one on the train appeared to have been injured.

"There was no bang or sound," he said, but after the train stopped, passengers sat in silence for some time before being told what had happened. Peering out his window, Mr. Simon said, he saw what looked to be the back of a landscaping trailer.

The M.T.A. confirmed this on its website. As of noon Wednesday, police had not yet released a statement on the accident.

Passengers on the train were routed back to Bridgehampton, where they were told to await additional instructions.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.

As reports of crimes of a sexual nature have apparently increased, those cases have drawn attention — not only because of their brutality, but also because allegations of abuse strike at deeply held assumptions about safety in a place that has seen itself as insulated from such offenses.
