Near midnight Sunday, Jack Hodgens was driving on Three Mile Harbor Road near Karlsruhe Cross Highway in Springs when he hit a pothole. Mr. Hodgens, 33, an East Hampton resident, told town police he lost control of his Toyota sport utility vehicle, which then struck a tree in the northbound lane.
A front-seat passenger, Michael John Poland, 36, was injured in the accident. Mr. Poland told police he had pain in his left arm, and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Mr. Hodgens was apparently not hurt.
The car sustained front-end damage and was towed. Police noted in their report that the pavement in the area of the pothole was “defective.”
