New Victim Comes Forward

A second victim of a postal worker accused last month of sexually assaulting a child in East Hampton has come forward, resulting in his indictment by the county on two violent felony charges along with a string of other charges stemming from both assaults.

Jenry Buestan Gutama, 23, of Moriches, was charged on June 10 with first-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse, both violent felonies, third-degree rape, a felony, and two counts each of sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors.

According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, the accused man was on the job as a mail carrier in May when he drove past a 15-year-old girl walking home from school. He offered to take her to buy food, but instead drove her to a cul-de-sac, where he held her wrists and prevented her from leaving his postal truck. Then, according to police, he took her to the back of the truck and sexually assaulted her.

Police said at the time that the victim, who they said knew Mr. Buestan Gutama, left the scene and went back to school, where she reported the incident to officials.

East Hampton Town police arrested the man several days later and charged him with first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. He was remanded to the county jail in Riverside at the time after being unable to make bail.

A 19-year-old “family friend” of Mr. Buestan Gutama came forward after seeing published reports of the initial incident, saying he had assaulted her when she was 15. She told police it happened in his car parked near her house. It was from jail that Mr. Buestan Gutama learned of the new charges against him, which came after newspaper reporting on his first known crime.

Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Karen Wilutis set bail at $150,000 cash, $450,000 bond or $1.5 million partially secured bond. Mr. Buestan Gutama, who remains in jail, is due back in her courtroom on July 17. He could face up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted of the top charge.
