Police responded to 13 calls to assist drivers during the snowstorm last week, eight of them for accidents in which no one was injured and the remainder for assistance with disabled vehicles.
A driver on Route 114 told police on New Year’s Eve that falling ice from another car had damaged her front bumper.
East Hampton Village
A lighted cigarette may have been to blame for a small fire in a garbage can near Stop and Shop the morning of Jan. 28. Firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly.
The Long Island Rail Road needed police assistance on the morning of Jan. 27 when the gates at the Osborne Lane railroad crossing malfunctioned. Police blocked the road off while the gates were being repaired.
Jan. 27 was one of the most frigid days of the winter so far, and a baby being pushed in a stroller that day prompted a concerned resident to call police. Officers were unable to find anyone pushing a stroller.
Montauk
A Marine Patrol officer helped a Montauk man rescue his dog from a deep rut in the rocks in front of the Montauk Lighthouse on Saturday.
A woman told police last week that snow and ice were to blame for a missing license plate.
Sag Harbor
A man went to police headquarters Friday morning to report that he’d narrowly avoided being hit by a car. He was on Division Street, he said, taking his daughter out of her car seat, when he saw an Audi TT coming too close to his car. He and the child were able to get to safety, but the car sustained some damage to the driver’s-side rear door. The driver of the Audi fled, and has not been located.
A local resident told police in the early morning hours of Jan. 27 that someone was walking around her yard. She thought she saw a flashlight and heard footsteps. Police canvassed the area and found some footprints — both human and animal — but did not find anyone suspicious. They told the woman they would conduct extra patrols in the Bayview Avenue area.
A garbage truck driving along Main Street last Thursday sideswiped her car, a woman reported.
Police told a resident that it was the snow, and not a plow, that toppled a mailbox on Montauk Avenue Extension on Jan. 26.
