It Was a Week Full of Snowy Crashes

Thu, 02/05/2026 - 12:55

Town police were busy with snow-related car accidents last week.

In Montauk, slippery conditions caused a Mercedes van to flip onto its side the morning of Jan. 26. Wilson Segarra-Aguirre of East Hampton, 40, told police he was making a left turn from Arnold Court onto Old Montauk Highway when he lost control of the van, which slid on the icy road and wound up lying on the passenger side. Mr. Segarra-Aguirre complained of head pain but refused medical treatment; his 39-year-old passenger was uninjured. The van was towed away from the scene.

The following afternoon, Jan. 27, a Postal Service mail truck was struck by another vehicle.

RD Carreno-Cordero, 73, of East Hampton, told police he was following behind the postal truck but that “snow stuck to the bottom of his shoe” and made his foot slip onto the gas pedal, causing his pickup truck to rear-end the mail carrier.

The postal worker, Erick Moran, 42, of Shirley, told police he had some minor back pain but declined medical intervention.

One accident not caused by the weather, according to the police report, happened last Thursday on Three Mile Harbor Road near Oakview Highway in East Hampton.

Zairi Sanchez-Ortega, 38, told police she was slowing for oncoming traffic when her sport utility vehicle was hit from behind by a Dodge van driven by Aidan Mansir, 18. Police said the teenager was following too closely and did not have time to stop.

An ambulance was called for Ms. Sanchez-Ortega when she complained of neck pain, but she declined when it arrived and took herself instead to the East Hampton Emergency Room. Her 16-year-old passenger was not injured, nor was Mr. Mansir.

No citations were issued.
