Landlord and Tenant at Odds

Thu, 05/29/2025 - 10:07

A landlord-tenant dispute in a Sag Harbor building resulted in multiple calls to police last week. On May 21, the tenant of a Spring Street building, who claimed to have a three-year lease in effect, said the landlord had changed the locks and listed the property for rent.

On Saturday, police were called again. This time the tenant alleged that the landlord had stolen $500 worth of items. The landlord, however, told police there was no lease in effect, so the tenant was there unlawfully.

The dispute continued in another call on Saturday, when officers were present and heard the landlord using foul language: “You m***f***er, pay your rent.” Both landlord and spouse were filmed by the tenant yelling other obscenities: “You smell, you need a shower, pay your effing rent, we don’t want your kind here.”

On Saturday night, an acquaintance of the tenant who was waiting outside the house told police that the landlord, who was in a car, had made other threatening remarks: “I’m going to do something to you,” and “A lot of people get shot these days,” before driving away.

The tenant then requested that police serve the landlord with a notice of trespass, but did not press charges. Police did warn the landlord to cease making threatening remarks.
