Missing Elderly Man Has Been Found

Update, Saturday, 2:25 p.m.: After an extensive search by East Hampton Town police drones, a Suffolk County police helicopter, and Southampton Town and Suffolk County K-9 units that began Friday evening, a missing 88-year-old East Hampton man was found Saturday afternoon by a town police sergeant operating a drone. 

The man, Francisco Alejo-Garcia, was found about a mile from his family's Springs-Fireplace Road residence, police said. Described as "a vulnerable adult with dementia," he had left his family's home on foot Friday night.

"Mr. Alejo-Garcia was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation and has been reunited with family," police said. 

Original, Saturday, 9:26 a.m.: East Hampton Town police drones, a Suffolk County police helicopter, and Southampton Town and Suffolk County K-9 units were deployed Friday evening in an extensive search for a missing 88-year-old man.

The man, Francisco Alejo-Garcia, left his residence on Springs-Fireplace Road on foot, family told police. He "is a vulnerable adult with dementia and may be in need of medical attention," said police, who are asking for the public's help in locating him. 

He is bald with brown eyes, 5-foot-2, 150 pounds, and "walks hunched over." Police said he "was last seen wearing a red, grey, and blue striped polo shirt with black pajama pants and grey Crocs."

Anyone with information about his whereabouts or who sees him has been asked to call police at 631-537-7575. "All calls will be kept confidential," the Police Department said.

When contract negotiations for 911 dispatching broke down between East Hampton Town and Village last spring, it became clear that the East Hampton Town Police Department would begin taking the bulk of 911 calls in the township from the village. The turnover was to occur on Jan. 1, but it has now been delayed for at least a month.
