East Hampton Town police and the United States Coast Guard are investigating the death of a man found unconscious Tuesday on a boat off the coast of Montauk Point.
Police identified the man today as Sean R. Smida, 38, of New Jersey. He had been fishing on a private sportfishing boat 130 miles off the coast.
According to reports, he may have had a medical emergency. He is said to have fallen unconscious around 10 a.m
Attempts by other passengers to resuscitate Mr. Smida were unsuccessful. The boat was immediately set on a course for the Montauk Coast Guard Station. He was declared dead at 1:45 p.m. upon arrival at the station on Star Island Road in Montauk.
According to his Instagram account, he was a father and a fisherman.
An investigation into his death is ongoing and pending review by the Suffolk County medical examiner. Foul play is not suspected.
