Two Drunken Driving Charges

Thu, 04/10/2025 - 12:33

A driver who sustained an injury to his shoulder in an accident on the evening of April 2 was charged afterward with misdemeanor drunken driving.

Mark Riser of East Hampton, 64, driving a 2015 BMW sedan, veered off the road at the intersection of Hand’s Creek Road and Clamshell Avenue in East Hampton and hit several trees and shrubs. He drove away from the scene, according to East Hampton Town police, who found him not far away and administered field sobriety tests.

There was a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he was observed to be unsteady on his feet,” according to the accident report.

The car sustained damage to its front and passenger side and was towed by Hammer Towing to its shop in Wainscott. Mr. Riser was released by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital after treatment that night, and was arraigned the next morning by East Hampton Town Justice David Filer. He is expected back in court on April 30.

Victor Gutierrez-Nunez of East Hampton, 46, was found on the night of March 30 in the parking lot of the North Main Street I.G.A. asleep in a 2011 Toyota with the engine running. Police had him perform roadside tests, on which, they reported, he “performed poorly.” Because Mr. Gutierrez-Nunez has a conviction for driving while intoxicated within the past 10 years, the D.W.I. charges against him are classified as felonies.

Justice Filer arraigned him on March 31. He too has an April 30 date with Town Justice Court.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
