E-Cyclist Airlifted After Montauk Hit-and-Run

The accident site after a hit-and-run crash on Saturday that left two men hospitalized.

Two men riding an e-bike in Montauk remain hospitalized in stable condition after being struck by an S.U.V. in a hit-and-run incident in Montauk on Saturday evening.

Suraj Gaire of Holbrook, the driver of a 2022 Honda Pilot, was arrested a little over an hour later during a traffic stop on Cranberry Hole Road in Amagansett and charged with two misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.

According to East Hampton Town police, Gustav Rowan, 31, was driving his e-bike on South Edgemere Street near South Euclid Avenue shortly before 6 p.m., with Donald Gordon, 28, as a passenger, when they were hit by Mr. Gaire's Honda.

Mr. Rowan, who lives in North Carolina, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, while Mr. Gordon, who lives in Florida, was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. As of Sunday afternoon, both were in stable condition.

As of Monday morning, Mr. Gaire, 28, had yet to be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court.

East Hampton Town police are still investigating the incident and have encouraged anyone with information to call 631-537-7575.
