Four Injured in Accidents

Thu, 05/25/2023 - 10:38

East Hampton Town and Village police reported three accidents involving injuries this week.

James McCaffrey of Point Lookout, 68, told police his 2015 Jeep was rear-ended at a stop sign at Bluff Road and Montauk Highway in Amagansett on May 16 shortly after 6 a.m., while he was attempting to make a right turn. The driver behind him, Jorge E. Naula of East Hampton, 24, in a GMC pickup truck registered to an estate-care company, was also trying to turn right. Mr. Naula told police he was “focused on the eastbound traffic” and did not see that the Jeep had not yet moved. The collision resulted in minor injuries for Mr. McCaffrey and a 76-year-old female passenger who had been sitting in the back; they declined the offer of an ambulance.

The next morning, Mark Lish of Mastic Beach, 66, driving a 2012 tanker truck belonging to a Yaphank business, was backing out of a driveway on Cedar Street, near Miller Lane East in East Hampton, when Heather Elliston of Southampton, 35, attempted to pass him in the eastbound lane. Ms. Elliston, driving a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban, told police she thought the lane was clear. The crash sent her vehicle careening into a utility pole. She complained of pain in her abdomen and was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment.

Later that day, just before 4 p.m., a collision on Montauk Highway at Buckskill Road apparently involved confusion over a turn signal. Ricardo D. Coley of East Hampton, driving a 2017 Ford pickup, told police he had sideswiped a 2001 Ford pickup the driver of which, he claimed, had signaled a right turn but then, said Mr. Coley, turned left. The driver of the Ford, Henry R. Saar, 21, of East Hampton, maintained that he had the correct signal on before Mr. Coley, 41, tried to pass him on the left. Mr. Coley complained of back pain and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
