They Couldn't Stop in Time

Thu, 04/01/2021 - 15:45

Carlton Kornegay, 56, of Arverne, in Rockaway, Queens, was stopped in Wainscott traffic last Thursday afternoon on the Montauk Highway by East Gate Road, when, according to East Hampton Town police, a Toyota pickup driven by Casten Mata, 23, of St. Petersburg, Fla., did not stop quickly enough and rear-ended Mr. Kornegay's 1995 Ford.

Mr. Kornegay's passenger, Allen Walker, 53, was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by Bridgehampton ambulance after complaining of pain in his upper arm.

It was a similar story on Three Mile Harbor Road in Springs on Saturday morning, when Carmen Arevalo of Amagansett, 45, driving a 2019 Honda, ran into Lirie Binozi's 2005 Chevrolet. Ms. Binozi, 64, of East Hampton was signaling a left turn onto Gardiner Avenue, both women told police, and Ms. Arevalo could not stop in time. Ms. Binozi was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by Springs ambulance for pain in her upper neck; the immobilized Chevrolet was hauled away by Hammer Towing.

Just one reported deer-car accident took place in East Hampton Town last week, early on the morning of March 23 in Montauk, at the Essex Street-Fairview Avenue intersection. The driver was lucky, police said; the deer, unfortunately, not so.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated which driver had a passenger in the car at the time of the accident.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
