Teen on a Bicycle, Car Coming

A 15-year-old bicyclist and the driver of a Toyota sedan both told police they did not see each other before colliding around 8:30 a.m. last Thursday near the Montauk Highway intersection with Wainscott Northwest Road.

David A. Foley of Southampton, 31, the driver of the eastbound 2009 Toyota sedan, was turning, he told East Hampton Town police, and Joseph Munoz of Wainscott was crossing the road, according to the report.

Mr. Munoz of Wainscott, who was not wearing a helmet, complained of leg pain and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by the Bridgehampton Fire Department ambulance squad. Mr. Foley was charged with "driving on a roadway laned for traffic."  

On Aug. 15 at around 3:20 p.m., the driver of a 2010 Lexus lost control of the car at the intersection of Daniel’s Hole Road and Hedges Lane in Wainscott, hitting first a utility pole, which broke in half on impact, and then a tree.

Eric D. Hadar of Mount Kisco, N.Y., 52, was northbound on Daniel’s Hole Road when it happened. He was rounding a curve at the time, he told police, who noted in the accident report that the road was wet from rain. Mr. Hadar complained of neck pain and shock but declined medical attention.

On Woods Lane in East Hampton Village, just east of Toilsome Lane, there was a rear-end accident at around 1:20 p.m. on Aug. 11. Ekta V. Daryanani of Brooklyn, 31, was eastbound, at the wheel of a 2012 Jeep that is registered to Robert P. Platzer of Greenlawn, when she ran into a 2015 BMW.

Ms. Daryanani told police traffic was slow and her dog, in the front of the car near the center console, had distracted her. She briefly took her eyes off the road, she said, and rear-ended the BMW. She was charged with following too closely.

The driver of the BMW, Victoria Rovner, 59, of New York City, had one passenger, Hailey Rovner, 25, who complained of head pain from the headrest deployment, but did not seek medical treatment. The BMW had rear bumper damage. The collision activated its impact sensors, deploying the headrest restraint system.

Another rear-end accident occurred last Thursday on Route 114 at about 9 p.m., just south of Hilltop Lane in Wainscott. Borja Cortes-Rodriguez, 28, of East Hampton, the driver of a 1998 Honda, was heading north on the turnpike when he ran into the vehicle ahead of him, which was attempting to make a left turn.

The driver of that car, Ishmael A. Khan, 34, of Springfield Gardens, had three passengers in the back seat of his 2015 Nissan. One of them, Cecilia Khan, 32, complained of neck pain but declined a trip to the hospital. Neither driver was charged, but the Nissan had to be towed.

On Aug. 16, a van backing out of a driveway on Harbor View Avenue in Springs caused an accident with an oncoming vehicle. At around 8:40 a.m., the driver of a 2001 Jeep, Bertha Quizhpi-Guichay of East Hampton, 33, was southbound on the avenue when the van hit the front of her vehicle. Its driver, Alejandro Giraldo of Hampton Bays, 31, told police he did not see a car approaching when he was backing up.

Ms. Quizhpi-Guichay complained of pain in her right foot and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Neither driver was charged.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, there were several errors in the account of the bicyclist injured in Wainscott on Aug. 17. Contrary to what was reported in the original article, the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. The police report does not indicate that the driver struck the bicyclist, but rather that both driver and bicyclist did not see each other prior to colliding. Additionally, it was the driver, and not the bicyclist, who was ticketed.
