Skidding On The Ice

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:22

Ice and snow continued to take their toll on drivers last week, with numerous accidents on local roads. Two crashes sent three Springs residents to Southampton Hospital

On Feb. 25, Floyd E. Downs was driving a 2008 pickup truck on Three Mile Harbor Road near Springy Banks Road in East Hampton when he “lost control of his vehicle on the icy road, causing him to cross the double yellow line,” the police reported.

In his truck’s path was an oncoming 2008 Chrysler sedan driven by Bettianne C. Mendez. The vehicles collided head-on, and both drivers, complaining of back pain, were taken away by ambulance. The vehicles had major front-end damage and were towed to Springs Fireplace Auto.

Eldima Martinez was driving a 2013 van just yards away from her Bayview Avenue, East Hampton, house on Friday morning when the van skidded on ice and slammed into an embankment of plowed snow on the shoulder, flipping over. When emergency crews arrived Ms. Martinez was complaining of leg and back pain, resulting in an ambulance trip. The van was righted by a tow truck crew from Balcuns Auto.
