Amagansett

A Northwest Woods teen, one day past his 16th birthday, left his backpack at Indian Wells Beach at around 10 p.m. on July 31. He returned a half-hour later to find it in disarray. A thief had stolen a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, some items of clothing, and an Anker phone charger. The total loss was about $400, the teen told police. The same thing happened at Indian Wells to another 16-year-old, also at night, on July 20.

East Hampton Village

Police got a tip that a car was swerving erratically near Gingerbread Lane on the afternoon of Aug. 1 and tracked it to the Stop and Shop parking lot. The driver of the 2013 Kia, a woman from Highlands Beach, Fla., told the officer that “her dog had jumped onto her lap, causing her to swerve off the road” as she was turning from Route 114 onto Gingerbread. “Negative problems encountered,” the report concluded.

A fox was seen running on Main Beach Friday around noon, “east of the pavilion, harassing beachgoers,” a caller told police. It was not to be found when they arrived.

Montauk

A cab driver out of Port Jefferson Station who is working the Montauk scene this summer left his cab outside the Surf Lodge in a taxi waiting area Saturday around midnight, and found, when he returned half an hour later, that his backpack was gone. It contained “sunblock, perfume, moisturizer, cookies, and an old boarding pass,” Syed M. Raza told police. He valued the items at $120, and said he does not expect ever to see them again.

A 2004 Yamaha golf cart, left overnight last Thursday outside the southern wall of the Star Island Yacht Club, was stolen. Ben Mahler, the club’s general manager, reported the theft in the morning.

Tempers flared Saturday night between the owner of Rita’s Stable and a tenant staying on the premises in a 1993 International Harvester camper. Nicholas Marano of San Diego and the owner, who was not named by police because Mr. Marano declined to press charges, were arguing over the rent, he said. He claimed she became enraged during the dispute, picking up a shovel and striking the side of the camper, causing considerable damage. She also picked up a Weber grill and threw it in the air, he said; it too was damaged. Police told the landlord and the tenant to stay away from each other.

Two women who gave their address as Madison Hill Drive were drinking at the Point Bar and Grill around midnight July 29 while their wallets were stolen from off the bar. Rosemary Grimm and Linda Mick discovered their losses around closing time. They told police they had less than $100 combined in the two wallets.

Sag Harbor

“Howling and whining” was the complaint police received last Thursday morning. They went to a Walker Avenue house, where a barking dog was loose in the yard. Police knocked on the door. At first, they reported, the homeowner, Shelly E. Guerrero, “would only come to the front window of the residence,” apparently declining to open the door. She eventually retrieved the animal, but was issued a citation for violating village code concerning the dog’s behavior and her responsibility for it.

Springs

A Runnymeade Drive woman was at work at the Amagansett I.G.A. when she received a call from two men who said her 17-year-old daughter had been in an accident. Rosa L. Chavez told police the men demanded $80,000 to learn where the girl was. Ms. Chavez immediately called her daughter, who was also at work and was fine. Police have been unable to contact the number left on her cellphone.
