East Hampton Village

The swans at Town Pond had some trouble this week. On April 15, a woman called police to report what she thought was an injured swan walking in the middle of James Lane at about 1 p.m. The swan had made its way back to the pond when police arrived and seemed content. But 15 minutes later, a female swan was the victim of a hit and run in front of 200 Main Street; someone moved it out of the road. It later died. Last Thursday, a swan with what was thought to be a leg injury was found walking on Newtown Lane at about 8:10 a.m. Personnel from the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays responded and reported that the swan showed evidence of lead poisoning.

National Grid responded to Toilsome Lane last Thursday at around 10:45 a.m., when Suffolk County Water Authority workers accidentally hit an abandoned underground gas line. The East Hampton Fire Department stood by while the damage was repaired.

A smell of gas in the area of West End Road and Apaquogue Road on Friday brought out police and fire officials at about 7:30 p.m. East Hampton Fire Department Chief Richard Osterberg Jr. asked National Grid to respond.

Police said a man with a backpack was placing clothes under the railroad platform on Railroad Avenue on Sunday at about 7:35 p.m. He apparently was asked not to do so.

Michael Heller of Sag Harbor turned in a 1978 pellet gun on Tuesday so that the police could properly dispose of it.

For the second time in two weeks, a rude gesture was reported to police. This time, Bruce Stafford told police a man gave him “the middle finger in an angry manner” on Friday afternoon.

A road rage incident occurred on Monday morning. John Capozzola said a blond woman driving a four-door black Mercedes passed his car at the intersection of Brick Kiln Road and Main Street and yelled at him. She threatened to phone police, but didn’t do so. He filed a police report at 11:25 a.m.

Kate R. Schumer went to police on Tax Day when she discovered someone had filed her federal taxes without her permission. Police are investigating it as identity theft.

Springs

A license plate was stolen from a trailer  parked in Richard D. Bell’s yard on Glade Road. Mr. Bell said he last noticed the plate on Dec. 16, 2014, and realized it was missing on April 5. He went to police on April 13.
