New Charge Against Eames

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:39

Jefferson Davis Eames, a Springs man who has been arrested here six times in the last six months on various misdemeanor charges, was arraigned April 5 in the Riverhead courtroom of State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho on a felony charge of grand larceny.

Mr. Eames pleaded not guilty to the charge. Justice Camacho set bail at $25,000. Eileen Powers, Mr. Eames’s attorney, had said previously that her client could not post that amount; however, Justice Camacho agreed that if Mr. Eames could be placed in an in-patient treatment center, he would release him. He was admitted to a treatment center, where he is now, and Justice Camacho lifted the bail on Monday.

According to court documents, Mr. Eames is accused of depositing a check for $24,600 from a contractor he had worked with many years ago. The contractor had sent the check to him accidentally.

The deposit was made the same day, Dec. 27, 2016, as an alleged drug and alcohol party hosted by Mr. Eames at his house on Neck Path, where police say up to 100 under-age drinkers were in attendance. One guest fell into a coma after an overdose and is recovering. Mr. Eames was charged with violating Suffolk County’s social host law, which prohibits such conduct. He also is facing the same charge involving two other parties in December.

An agreement had been worked out in East Hampton whereby Mr. Eames was to plead guilty to some of the misdemeanors and serve eight months in county jail; the remaining charges would be dropped. That deal was pulled off the table after East Hampton detectives leveled the grand larceny charge on March 23.

Mr. Eames is due back in Justice Camacho’s courtroom on April 26, and in East Hampton Town Justice Court next month.
