Marijuana After Midnight

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:12

East Hampton Village police pulled a driver over last week for a minor traffic violation and found him to be high on prescription medication and marijuana.

An officer stopped a 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Michael Joseph Dower Jr. of Springs, 23, on Newtown Lane near Park Place on Dec. 9 at about 12:30 a.m. The car’s Florida license plate was not illuminated, the officer reported, adding that Mr. Dower’s eyes were red and glassy, his speech was slurred, and he appeared lethargic.

He told the officer he had had one beer earlier in the evening. Asked if he had taken any medication or drugs, he reportedly admitted taking several Hydroxyzine and Suboxone pills earlier, and said he had just smoked some marijuana. The Hydroxyzine had been prescribed to him.

Once the driver opened his door to perform roadside sobriety tests, police noticed a pill container in a cup holder, with a green leafy substance inside, which later tested positive for marijuana. Mr. Dower had trouble maintaining his balance, according to the report, stumbling and swaying. He failed the tests.

A small plastic container with Acetaminophen was also found. Back at headquarters, Mr. Dower consented to a blood test and a urine analysis; the results are pending.

Charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana and inadequate plate lights, both violations, Mr. Dower was arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court later that morning. Justice Lisa R. Rana released him on $350 bail, and he is due back in court on Jan. 21.

Another Springs driver also wound up in police custody last week. East Hampton Town police charged Carlson R. Jacobs, 47, with driving while intoxicated after his 1998 Chevrolet struck a mailbox, then a tree, as he was headed north on Norfolk Drive in Springs on Friday. The arrest occurred at about 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Jacobs’s blood-alcohol content was recorded at 0.18, according to police, just enough to levy an elevated charge of aggravated D.W.I., a misdemeanor. Following arraignment on Saturday, Mr. Jacobs was released on his own recognizance.

A 16-year-old East Hampton girl was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving following an accident on Maidstone Park Road in Springs last Thursday. Police said the girl, whose name was withheld because she is eligible for youthful offender status, crashed a 2015 Jeep near Gallatin Lane at about 12:25 a.m. She appeared intoxicated and failed all field sobriety tests, police said. Justice Rana released her without bail.
