He Wasn’t Supposed to Be Behind Wheel

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:11

In light of a previous conviction for driving while intoxicated, an East Hampton man arrested Sunday morning for the same offense was charged with felony D.W.I.

East Hampton Town police said Segundo P. Quezada, 51, driving a 2004 Nissan X-Terra, was under the influence as he headed home on Springs-Fireplace Road around 1:15 a.m. An officer reportedly saw the car swerving and failing to signal as it turned onto West Drive, where Mr. Quezada lives. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests, the officer said.

The driver, who was convicted of D.W.I. in 2014, was additionally charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, also a felony given that his driving privileges had been revoked following the conviction and further suspended for failure to pay a driver’s responsibility assessment. Police also discovered that as part of the conviction, he had been ordered not to operate a vehicle without an Interlock device, which, like a Breathalyzer, requires the driver to blow into it; if a certain degree of alcohol is detected the device prevents the engine from starting. He was charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly using a leased, rented, or loaned car not equipped with the device.

Mr. Quezada was released on $10,000 cash bail after being arraigned before Justice Lisa R. Rana.

A 39-year-old Selden woman was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving in East Hampton at about 1 a.m. on Saturday. Town police stopped Ana C. Celanti’s 2016 Mercedes Benz as she drove west on Montauk Highway, saying that she had failed to stay in her lane and was speeding. Police said they clocked her at 65 miles per hour in a 30 m.p.h. zone. She performed poorly on all field sobriety tests, according to the report.

Ms. Celanti was charged with aggravated D.W.I.; police said her blood alcohol level was above .18. Justice Rana arraigned her later on Saturday morning, and released her on $500 bail.
