‘He Was Going to Kill Me’

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:41

A Deer Park man recently paroled from a state prison has spent the past few days in county jail following a domestic incident at the Royal Atlantic Hotel in Montauk.

According to East Hampton Town police, Peter A. Noto, 53, who was released in December from the Willard Drug Treatment Center, a specialized state prison in Seneca County, was spending the weekend with his wife. The couple were staying in room 217 at the resort.

The reunion did not go well, said Cheryl Ann Noto, who gave a statement to police on Saturday night. “I was spending the weekend with my soon-to-be ex,” she told them. “This morning, I could tell something was off . . . eventually, I kicked him out.”

At about 4 p.m., she stated, he returned, and began banging on the door. She called management, who told him to leave. Four hours later, though, he was back, this time breaking through the door. Ms. Noto told police he “kicked and spit on me,” threatening that “he was going to kill me.”

Police were quickly on the scene. Mr. Noto spit at them, too, saying he would kill them as well.

He was handcuffed and charged with two violation counts of harassment, one for the attack on his wife and the other for his actions against the police. A more serious charge of criminal mischief, for the damage done to the door, was leveled as well; the management estimated repairs at $300.

The amount could prove the man’s undoing: When damage exceeds $250, the crime is considered a felony. Mr. Noto, who is also likely to face a charge of violating parole, has at least four felony convictions on his record, meaning that he is ineligible to have bail set at the local level, as East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky told him Sunday morning. He is due back in court today.

At about 5 a.m. on Tuesday, police stopped a speeding car on Springs-Fireplace Road in East Hampton and wound up arresting the driver, Brian A. Holt of Brentwood, 48, and his passenger, Cali Marie Laborne of Amityville, 25. Ms. Laborne was found to have two outstanding warrants, one in Suffolk and the other in Nassau, citing unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

A search of her person turned up two hypodermic needles, according to police. As officers went through her handbag, they also found a crack pipe. “Yes, that is my pocketbook, but that is not my crack pipe,” she is said to have told them. Police also found a pill in the handbag which they believe to be a controlled substance. The woman was charged with three misdemeanors in all.

A search of Mr. Holt turned up two crack pipes. “Yes, it’s mine,” he reportedly admitted. “I have a problem.”

At their arraignment later that morning, Justice Tekulsky set $200 bail for Mr. Holt, noting that the defendant also faces two open possession cases in county court and has a criminal record in Nevada. Bail was posted.

Ms. Laborne’s bail was set at $250. She was in county jail as of yesterday morning. Both are due back in court today.

Justice Irace: ‘You Are a Risk’

A 67-year-old East Hampton woman accused of driving her car into two teenage traffic control officers in Sag Harbor Village on May 17 pleaded not guilty to four charges — endangering the welfare of a child, harassment in the second degree, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless endangerment — when she was arraigned Friday in front of Village Justice Carl Irace.
