Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:37
Police tape can be seen near the spot on Farm Lane in East Hampton where an 82-year-old man was found injured on Sunday following an apparent hit-and-run.

Update, 10:15 a.m.: Police believe the 82-year-old found in the road on Farm Lane in East Hampton Sunday afternoon was the victim of a hit-and-run. Harvey Roth, who lives on the block, went out for a walk and was found by a passing motorist in the roadway, according to East Hampton Town Police Capt. Chris Anderson.

Mr. Roth suffered a serious leg injury, he said, and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.

"He was not there for a prolonged amount of time," Captain Anderson said, adding that it was believed to be "just minutes."

No arrests have been made yet. The police captain asked that the driver who hit Mr. Roth "contact the authorities." Anyone with information about the accident has been asked to call detectives at 631-537-7575. All calls will be kept confidential.

Originally, 9:39 a.m.: An elderly man was found with what police are calling serious physical injuries on an East Hampton road Sunday afternoon. The detective division said a passing motorist came across Harvey Roth, 82, on Farm Lane, off Spring Close Highway, at 4:30 p.m. and called 911.

Mr. Roth was airlifted by a Suffolk County medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, a level-one trauma center. Police did not detail his injuries, nor did they say if it appeared he was hit by a car.

Though police did not provide his address, records show Mr. Roth lives on Farm Lane.

The investigation is continuing, and police have asked anyone with information to contact the East Hampton Town Police Department at 631-537-7575. All calls will be kept confidential.
