David D. King

Thu, 09/18/2025 - 09:43

David D. King kept a boat since he was a child and enjoyed fishing, clamming, swimming, and, in years past, diving.

Mr. King, who ran his own plumbing business, David King Plumbing and Heating, died at home in East Hampton on Sept. 9. He was 71 and had cancer.

As happy in his garden as he was on the water, Mr. King faithfully tended to his vegetables and had begun to grow dahlias in the last few years. He was a member of the conservation organization Ducks Unlimited.

Born in Southampton on Nov. 5, 1953, to Donald P. King and the former Judith Talmage, Mr. King was a lifelong resident of the South Fork. He grew up in Amagansett and graduated from East Hampton High School in 1971. He worked for Russell Card Plumbing and Heating for about 10 years before striking out on his own.

He and the former Lynn Wells were married on March 10, 1973. For three decades the Kings had visited Marathon, Fla., spending two months there each winter, and they met up with some of the many friends they made there each summer in different states.

His wife survives, as do a son, Jason King, and two grandchildren, Hailey and Austin, who live in Summerville, S.C. A sister, Betsy Martin of Amagansett, also survives.

Visiting hours were on Wednesday at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A graveside service was to be held Thursday morning at 11 at Green River Cemetery in Springs.
