Paid Notice: Michael George Cooke, 80, a Montauk resident for almost fifty years, passed away peacefully on November 24th at Treasure Coast Hospice in Florida after a brief illness.

Born on December 21,1944 in Staten Island, New York, Michael was the oldest of seven siblings. After attending Our Lady Queen of Peace Elementary School and St. Peter’s Boys High School in Staten Island, Michael entered the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1964 to 1967. Following his honorable discharge, Michael attended college in the Midwest, graduating from St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota.

Michael enjoyed a long career as a firefighter with FDNY, working in busy truck companies in Manhattan and Queens for almost twenty-five years and forging close friendships with fellow firefighters that lasted right up to his passing.

Michael enjoyed hosting family and friends at his Montauk home, and after retirement lived the snowbird life, traveling to warmer climates for the winter months, finally in 2018 settling down in Hobe Sound, Florida, near his brother Lawrence.

Michael is survived by four of his siblings, Mary, Owen, Jean, and Lawrence, as well as four nephews, two nieces and two grand nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Marian and Elizabeth.

Michael will be remembered for his sharp wit, his remarkable memory, his love of boating, and his hospitality to family and friends.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 27th at St. Therese Roman Catholic Church in Montauk at 2 pm.
