Aug. 12, 1929 - May 3, 2025

Lee Maria Choron and her husband, Irvin, "fell in love with Montauk in the early 1960s," her family wrote, "vacationing often and finally purchasing their Montauk home in the late 1970s. This began a legacy for her family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren."

Ms. Choron, who also lived in Bay Shore and owned and operated the Grand Store, a five-and-dime retailer in Pelham, N.Y., from 1965 until 1995, died on May 3 at the age of 95.

"What began 60 years ago as a vacation has become the generational hometown for her family. Her son Greg and daughter-in-law, Eileen, as well as Lee's youngest son, Doug, have all made Montauk their permanent home."

And so has Ms. Choron's granddaughter Deborah Choron, "a law partner at Matthews, Kirst, Cooley & Choron in East Hampton. Deborah also serves the Montauk community as a volunteer E.M.T."

Born on Aug. 12, 1929, in Vienna, Austria, to Hugo Vondorfer and the former Johanna Plowitz, Ms. Choron grew up in Rye, N.Y., and attended a public high school in New York City. She and Irvin Choron were married on June 14, 1952. He died in 2014.

A boater and snorkeler, she also enjoyed travel, art, and photography.

"Lee's passion for beachwalking and collecting beach glass has been passed down to her other granddaughters, Rebecca Welton and Rachel Choron," her family said. "Lee would be charmed to know that her great-grandchildren, Colin and Cameron Jones, continue searching for beach glass in her footsteps on the Montauk beaches."

Ms. Choron was buried at Sharon Gardens in Valhalla, N.Y.
