Jason H. Bertanzel, who had lived on Swamp Road in East Hampton for much of his life, died of a heart ailment on Oct. 2 in Manorville, where he resided for the last year. He was 45 and had held various jobs, including in construction, at an automobile shop, and as a sanitation worker.
“Jason was known for his outrageous sense of humor and youthful spirit,” his sister, Abby Lloyd of New York City, wrote. “He was great with kids. He loved animals, and always had an animal companion. Jason also loved music. He was a lifelong tinkerer with a passion for cars and dirt bikes — always building or taking something apart. He was also a surprisingly good singer, though he’d never let on. Above all, Jason was loyal to those he loved.”
Born on Oct. 9, 1979, in Glen Cove to Jay Bertanzel and the former Mary Disbrow, he spent most of his years in East Hampton and Sag Harbor, and graduated from East Hampton High School.
“Our great-grandmother Ruth Disbrow was the Sunday school teacher, trustee, lay leader, and president of the United Women’s Association,” according to Ms. Lloyd. As stated in her obituary, “In 1937, she married George S. Disbrow, whose grandfather Nelson Disbrow founded the Oyster Bay Guardian newspaper. Together they owned Joffone’s Grocery Store in Westbury, later moving to Sag Harbor in 1962 to run the Red Barn Grocery Store and later Red Door Cleaners on Division Street.”
Mr. Bertanzel’s parents died before him. In addition to Ms. Lloyd and her partner, Chris, he is survived by his stepfather, Stephen Lloyd, and his partner, Joan, of Glen Cove; a grandmother, Patricia Disbrow; his aunts Ruth Mentzinger, Kathy Krapf, Nancy Lloyd Pena, and Jackie Larsen; his uncles George Disbrow, Scott Mentzinger, Jimmy Krapf, and Scott Larsen; two great-aunts, Marilyn Fertig and Cindy Lesta; two great-uncles, Charlie Lesta and Donald Disbrow, and many cousins and friends.
Mr. Bertanzel was cremated. Those wishing to share memories or condolences have been asked to contact Ms. Lloyd at [email protected].
