Aug. 12, 1943 - April 15, 2024

Sheila Dunne Jones Bono, a retired special education teacher who worked first in East Hampton and later at the Tuckahoe School in Southampton, died of complications of a stroke on April 15 at the Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Riverhead. She was 80.

Mrs. Bono, a past president of the East End Retired Teachers Association, earned her bachelor’s degree from Willimantic State Teachers College in Connecticut and her master’s degree at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus. Helping the children she worked with was among her great life achievements, her family said.

Born in Springfield, Mass., on Aug. 12, 1943, to Arthur M. Dunne and the former Mary O’Connor, she grew up in Chicopee, Mass., but moved to the South Fork in 1966. She had two children with her first husband, William M. Jones III, and raised them in East Hampton.

Mrs. Bono lived in East Hampton or Springs for most of her adult life, with the exception of 2015 to 2019, when she moved to Ames, Iowa, to be near her daughter, Dr. Shannon Jones Hostetter, who was living there at the time.

She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church here and of St. Cecilia Catholic Church when she lived in Ames. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and eating out.

On April 28, 2018, she married Philip W. Bono of Springs, who survives.

She is also survived by her daughter and her husband, Dr. Jesse Hostetter, who now live in Watkinsville, Ga., and by her son, William M. Jones, and his wife, Valerie LeCann Jones of Newtown, Conn. She leaves five grandchildren, Madeleine and Phoebe Jones and Liam, Spencer, and Samuel Hostetter.

A sister, Susan Dunne Cannon of Honeoye, N.Y., also survives.

A service will be held at a later date.

Her family has suggested memorial contributions to Most Holy Trinity at 79 Buell Lane, East Hampton 11937, or to St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Avenue, Ames, Iowa
