The Travis Field memorial double-elimination coed softball tournament, which many say is their favorite event of the summer, is to begin Thursday at the Terry King ball field in Amagansett with 17 teams — seven in the A bracket and 10 in the B bracket — vying for trophies.
Two sisters from Potomac, Md., visiting here with their family, died early Wedneday morning in a house fire on Spring Lane, off Noyac Road in Noyac. Lt. Susan Ralph of the Southampton Town police said the other members of the family were able to escape from the rented house. The son leapt from a second-floor window, she said.
The Springs Fisherman's Fair will be combined this year with the Springs Agricultural Fair. Set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside Ashawagh Hall, it will feature live music, vendors of clams, crafts, food, and fish, a plant sale, and a children's area.
The Suffolk County Water Authority declared a Stage 1 water emergency on Tuesday and is asking its customers across the East End to stop irrigation between midnight and 7 a.m., limit their shower times, and "refrain from all nonessential water usage."
