It was readily apparent that the day ahead was going to be a hot one, even if the 72-degree water of the incoming tide outside the nearby breakwater seemed cool to the touch.

Drew Smith, the newly appointed captain of East Hampton Village's lifeguards, has brought new life to Main Beach in particular and the the sandy stretch from Georgica to Two Mile Hollow in general.

The 73rd Artists and Writers Softball Game is to be contested at East Hampton's Herrick Park on Saturday at 2 p.m. Batting practice starts at noon.
