East Hampton Marine Patrol has received multiple reports of illegal shellfish poaching from concerned citizens since late August, following a front-page article in this newspaper highlighting the growing problem in local waters. Several reports could not be confirmed, but a number of others did make the police log, and were recorded as violations.

A complaint about “a structure constructed out of trash” brought police to a beach between Big Albert’s Landing and the pier at the Bell Estate on Aug. 26, where they found a small structure made from driftwood, painted in different colors.

Item of the Week: Meet Ettie Hedges Pennypacker

In this undated photograph, Ettie Hedges Pennypacker (1879-1970) stands in a farmyard in a long pale dress. The dress is anachronistic, a simple Empire style popular into the 1820s but out of fashion during her lifetime. Perhaps she is in costume for a party, such as the ones she attended at Home, Sweet Home or the state historians conference.

Barbara Schwartz

Barbara E. Schwartz, a former teacher in Manhattan who lived in East Hampton for 20 years, died at home on Settlers Landing Lane on Aug. 31. She was 76.

Rodney J. Roncaglio

A onetime Vietnam War tank driver who became a New York Police Department detective and later a proprietor of a local wine shop, Rodney Roncaglio of East Hampton died on Aug. 24 at the Kanas Hospice Center in Quiogue. He was 75.

Riding Scholarship Apps Due

The Stony Hill Stables Foundation is once again offering scholarships to South Fork children interested in horseback riding. Applications are due Sunday, Sept. 25, in person at the stables, 268 Town Lane in Amagansett, and scholarships will be awarded "right away in September," the organization says on its website.

Bonac Footballers Are ‘Movin’ on Up’

Rare Feat at the Hampton Classic Horse Show

Karl Cook, a 31-year-old Southern Californian who had not competed at the Hampton Classic before, not only won Friday’s $74,000 Grand Prix Qualifier, which entitled him and his 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare to go last in Sunday’s $410,000 Grand Prix, but won that class too, a very rare feat.

Diane O’Donnell, who coaches East Hampton High School’s girls cross-country team, had all of her charges running in the Great Bonac 5K in Springs on Labor Day, and they did well, as did a Bonac alumnus, Erik Engstrom, in the 10K.
