Matt Hartline, a master arborist and partner at Bill Miller Associates in Water Mill, will lead a workshop at the LongHouse Reserve on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the “art and science of pruning.” Mr. Hartline will focus on ornamental trees and how to “select plants in the LongHouse gardens to lead participants in an opportunity to watch, learn, and do some of their own pruning,” according to the reserve.
The cost is $30 for members and $40 for others, and gloves and snippers are recommended. Participants will get to take home saplings.
Wittendale’s Florist and Greenhouses, at 89 Newtown Lane, has expanded its native plant selection this season and will have master gardeners from ReWild Long Island on hand on Saturday and on Friday, May 23, to answer questions about native plants and indicate the right ones for gardens.
ReWild works to improve biodiversity and regional ecosystem health by encouraging sustainable landscaping practices. Its volunteers will be at Wittendale’s from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to noon on the 23rd. Native plants will be marked with a red “Native to Long Island” label and listed in a booklet with information about the good they can do for local pollinators.
On Wednesday, ReWild has invited people to grab their work gloves and a trowel and lend a hand on planting day at two community gardens here. The group will be at Windmill Village I at 219 Accabonac Road from noon to 2 p.m. The contact is Gerry Mooney at [email protected] or Len Green at [email protected].
