A Winter Burn Window at Mashomack

The winter burn window at the Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is in effect through Dec. 20. The public has been advised that during this time a prescribed burn may take place and smoke may be visible.

A prescribed fire, which is dependent on weather and other conditions, is a land management tool in which fire is intentionally applied to vegetation. Its proper implementation promotes the health of oak forests by suppressing invasive species, prompting biodiversity, and promoting tree regeneration. It also benefits people by reducing tick habitat and abundance as well as abating wildfire risk by reducing forest fuel buildup.

If conditions are met and a prescribed fire is confirmed, a notice will be sent in advance. The public has been advised to direct any questions to the Mashomack stewardship team at 631-749-1001 or via email to [email protected]
