Hamptons Observatory Co-Hosts Webb Telescope Celebration

Thu, 07/06/2023 - 09:54

To mark the first anniversary of the celestial images captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the Hamptons Observatory and Suffolk Community College will co-host a virtual talk by Michael T. Menzel, NASA Mission Systems engineer for the telescope, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The telescope “is now well into its first year of operation, producing magnificent images and data that is already reshaping our understanding of the early universe,” the Hamptons Observatory said in a release. In the talk, titled “A 1st Anniversary NASA Event: The Science Behind the James Webb Space Telescope,” Mr. Menzel “will provide an overview of the J.W.S.T., its system design and its challenges, as well as the telescope’s remarkable observations and data collected to date.”

Before its launch on Dec. 25, 2021, Mr. Menzel was Lockheed Martin’s deputy program manager for its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope. He is the recipient of nine awards for leadership, distinguished service, and engineering achievements over his 42-year career in the space exploration field.

The talk is free, but advance registration is required at JWST.eventbrite.com.
