It's the 25th anniversary of the Bridgehampton Lions Club's Carving Contest, a creative extravaganza taking place on Monday starting at 5 p.m. at the Bridgehampton Community House.

Little ones will enjoy a puppet show by Liz Joyce's Goat on a Boat theater and free cider and doughnuts provided by the Milk Pail, as contestants set up their entries in a dozen categories including perennial favorites like Alice in Pumpkinland, Jack Cousteau, Classic Jack, and Odd Lot. New categories this year, all open to wide interpretation, are Vincent van Glow, Stellar, Fright Market, Haunted Habitat, Mr. Pumpkinhead, We are the Hollow Men, and All Else. There are cash prizes ranging from $25 all the way up to $400 for the carver crowned Master Blade.

If you plan on entering, make sure to arrive by 5 p.m. with your carved creation; this has become one of the signature Halloween events on the South Fork and it will be crowded. There is no charge to enter and no limit on the number of entries per person or group. Carving does not take place on site, but rather the weekend before at home. More information is at bridgehamptonlions.org.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
