Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island has more than 70 Red Star hens who are “going into retirement” -- meaning they are starting to age past their egg-laying prime -- and need good homes.

The organization said Tuesday it is selling the hens, who are between two and three years old, for $5 each. People who are interested should take their own crates to pick them up in.

“They have been fed a primarily organic diet (with the exception of non-certified scratch grains and sunflower seeds) and live outdoors with free range,” Sylvester Manor said in the announcement. “Some of them are missing feathers due to pecking behavior.”

Those who would like to adopt a hen, or who need additional information, can call 631-379-3965 or email [email protected].

Really, really big.
