Composting Tables Are Back

Thu, 05/14/2026 - 10:58

The South Fork chapter of ReWild Long Island, which works with communities to protect and improve the biodiversity, resilience, and health of regional ecosystems, will resume hosting compost tables at farmers markets in East Hampton Town starting this weekend.

Residents have been invited to drop off food scraps, pick up residential composting tips, and chat about native plants, pollinators, and upcoming children’s workshops at the ReWild compost tables at the Springs Farmers Market on the grounds of Ashawagh Hall starting on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continuing on Saturdays into the fall. Tables will also be set up on Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. at Amber Waves Farm in Amagansett starting next week, and at the Montauk Community Garden, on the grounds of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon starting on May 30.

Last year, composters in the town diverted more than 13,000 pounds of food scraps from the trash, transforming them into soil food for gardens and farms. The South Fork chapter hopes to double that total this year.
