At its March 11 meeting, the East Hampton Town Planning Board scheduled a public hearing on the Hamptons Pride memorial planned for the Wainscott Green for April 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Hamptons Pride has proposed a celebratory outdoor social area, a marker for L.G.B.T.Q. history, and a memorial garden for those on the East End who lost their lives to the AIDS epidemic. Short trails and colorful sculptures are planned for the site, at the corner of Montauk Highway and East Gate Road, which is significant, because that was the location of the Swamp, an important gay nightclub from the late 1970s until after the turn of the 21st century.

The centerpiece of the park is to be a dance floor 14 inches off the ground that will sit in the exact spot of the Swamp’s dance floor when it was the go-to spot for the gay community.

The planning board last discussed the application in February, when its members deemed the layout acceptable. Hamptons Pride has since provided them with a revised landscaping plan and some survey and engineering details.

Twelve parking spaces are proposed. David Browne, the town’s fire marshal, wrote the board on March 2 affirming that the plan met Americans With Disabilities Act requirements.
