Work on Route 114 Continues

Thu, 02/27/2025 - 11:47
Ongoing work at the intersection of Route 114 and Stephen Hand’s Path in East Hampton includes new “left turn lanes at every approach and a new enhanced traffic signal,” which explains all the extra lights hanging above the intersection, according to the State Department of Transportation.

Those who have driven through the intersection of Route 114 and Stephen Hand’s Path in East Hampton may have noticed about 15 traffic lights dangling above. They are part of the ongoing construction at the site, which was scheduled to be finished this month but is now expected to continue into the summer.

Route 114 is a state road, and the work is being conducted by the State Department of Transportation. Asked about it, State Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni deferred to Stephen Canzoneri, a spokesman for the department, who said by email that its goal is “to enhance safety and improve traffic flow at the intersection.”

The work includes “the addition of left turn lanes at every approach and a new enhanced traffic signal,” which accounts for the additional lights hanging above the intersection. They are scheduled to be fully activated in the coming weeks, Mr. Canzoneri said.

The work yet to be done, he added, includes “new pedestrian accommodations compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),” which will “enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians.”

Montauk Chemists Opens, Minus Pharmacy

Frank Calvo, the longtime pharmacist at White’s Drug and Department Store, which closed on Oct. 31, has opened Montauk Chemists on Main Street and is selling over-the-counter merchandise including vitamins and self-care products. One week after an inspection of the store’s pharmacy, however, he is still awaiting New York State approval to operate it.

Slow Start at New Gosman’s

In some ways, Gosman’s Dock, one of Montauk’s few remaining family-owned and operated businesses until its October 2024 sale, closely resembles the complex of restaurants and shops long revered by locals and visitors alike. In other ways, though, it is markedly different under its new ownership.
