The East Hampton Town Democrats are organizing a demonstration to demand that Representative Nick LaLota hold in-person town hall meetings. The demonstration is planned for Tuesday morning at 10:30 in Montauk, during a press conference about the emergency dredging of the Montauk Inlet, which began over the weekend.

“People are concerned about what’s happening in Washington right now,” said Anna Skrenta, chairwoman of the Democratic Committee, said by phone Friday afternoon. “Unfortunately, Congressman LaLota does not hold in-person town halls open to the public.”

Congress has just entered a recess period, which will last until Monday, and according to Ms. Skrenta these periods are built in so elected officials can meet with their constituents.

“Recesses are specially for congresspeople to go back to their districts and engage with constituents asking him to do his job,” she said.

Organizers of the demonstration have asked people to register in advance at this site. The exact meeting place will be provided after registration.

“This is an opportunity for us to assemble somewhere he’ll actually be present,” Ms. Skrenta said, “so we’ll gather with signs and let him know that his constituents want an opportunity to have a town hall with him.”

Mr. LaLota’s office had not responded to a request for comment as of Monday morning.
