In a brief meeting on Monday, the East Hampton Town Trustees set Oct. 9 as the date of their 32nd annual Largest Clam Contest.

Last year, the contest pit clams dug from Three Mile, Accabonac, and Napeague Harbors against one another, with previous contests including those harvested from Lake Montauk.

The day is also intended to showcase the trustees’ role in the town’s government. It typically includes a clam chowder contest, a free raw bar, free chowder, and in recent years live music. Last year saw the addition of free samples of clam pies baked by residents. The East End Classic Boat Society typically exhibits and sells raffle tickets for the boat its members have built, and the town’s shellfish hatchery offers an aquaculture display.

Susan McGraw Keber was appointed to head up the contest this year, David Cataletto and Ben Dollinger will serve on a planning committee, and John Aldred will be a consultant.

The trustees voted to allocate up to $8,000 for the day, most of which Ms. McGraw Keber said goes toward food.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
